Obstructive sleep apnea can result when the fleshy uvula and soft palate fall back on the windpipe, sealing it partially or completely. Several episodes of sleep apnea can lead to low blood oxygen levels, which can trigger palpitations, headaches, lethargy, weight gain, poor concentration, low work efficiency and sometimes death.
Up to 5 episodes of sleep apnea (breathlessness) per hour is considered normal. Fewer than 20 episodes per hour is considered mild and can often be treated with the right sleeping position and a scientific contour pillow. Over 20 episodes per hour requires urgent medical attention.
